So, you want to learn to skydive on your own.....

If you are starting with a Tandem jump and get hooked, here's the program you will follow. One of the most integrated instruction methods around. We have a twelve-jump program to get you going. The first tandem jump is designed to introduce you to skydiving, while on each successive jump you do more and more on your own.
Here's the course layout:

  • Three tandem jumps
  • Ground training
  • Three static line jumps
  • Four Instructor Assisted freefall (IAF) jumps
  • One high solo
  • One low solo

  • Once you have completed the training program, you can skydive on your own (for only $20 a jump, plus gear rental if you need it). You will also have completed many of the requirements for a USPA (United States Parachute Association) 'A' license.

Tandem jumps:

During the first three tandem jumps, you are harnessed to an expert instructor. Like we said, the first skydive introduces you to jumping out of a perfectly good airplane and experiencing the whole shebang. During the second and third tandem jumps, you will be working on basic skills necessary to advance to the next level.

Ground training:

Ground training teaches you how to jump out of the plane on your own and return safely to the ground. Training includes lectures, discussion, emergency training and testing, harness training, videos, etc. You name it, we make sure you know your stuff - safety is our primary concern.

Static line jumps:

During a static line your parachute opens automatically when you exit the plane. You'll go up to 3,500-4,500 feet, jump out (no instructor with you this time), and fly your canopy to the ground. Your jump will be supervised by your instructor, and your parachute flight will be assisted by ground-to-air (that means you!) radio.

Instructor Assisted Freefall jumps:

This time you go all the way to 11,000 feet and jump out on your own, but with an instructor jumping with you. The objective of these jumps is to fly around the sky in a controlled manner, to practice basic skills and awareness and to be responsible for deploying your own parachute. Once your parachute is open you practice flight maneuvers, have fun and land softly, with progressively less ground to air instruction.

High and low solo:

Assuming you've been catching on to things by now, you are ready to do your two solo jumps. The first one is from 11,000, and the second from 4000 feet. The objectives are to safely do everything on your own, and have fun.

Coach jumps:

So you've completed the program and are now a novice skydiver. At this point you are eligible to jump on your own at our Dropzone at experienced jump prices. But if you are continuing on, coach jumps can help you obtain your USPA license faster. Most Dropzones view a USPA license as your endorsement of training. This 'ticket' is what allows you to jump at Dropzones other than Central Michigan Skydivers. Want to go on for your USPA license? Coach jumps are available after you've graduated from our course. A qualified coach will plan a dive, jump with you, and give you feedback (including video footage whenever possible). The $75 price covers your slot and the coach's slot on the plane, the rig rental, packing, tailor-made help for your A license requirements, instructional feedback and the coach's fee.

USPA license:

Some of the requirements for a first-level USPA license include 25 freefalls, and knowing how to pack your own chute, among other things. After passing a written test, you can apply to the USPA for an 'A' license, which is your ticket to jump at essentially any dropzone in the world.
